Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Annual U.S. scholarship program awarded to up to 300 outstanding juniors and seniors who plan to pursue a career in mathmematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. It awards up to $7,500 annually to cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

British Marshall Scholarship
Annual scholarship program that allows up to 45 young Americans to study in the U.K. for two years. It awards full tuition and fees to any accredited university in the U.K., living allowance, travel expenses to/from the U.K., support of a dependent spouse, annual book grant, annual thesis grant, research & daily travel grant.

DAAD Graduate Scholarship
The German Academic Exchange Service, which provides study scholarships and research grants to students to pursue graduate study in Germany. Award usually includes tuition waivers, travel costs, health insurance, and monthly stipend. Previous German language experience helpful but not required, though interested students should consult the DAAD website for more details.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
An international education program, established in 1946 and sponsored by the U.S. government, with the goal of facilitating relationships between the U.S. and other countries. Specifically, the U.S. Student Program awards fellowships to recent bachelor’s graduates, master’s and doctoral students, young professionals and artists for study and research abroad. This program also has an English Teaching Assistantships Program. Students can apply to study almost anywhere in the world, although certain countries are prohibited. The award is typically for one academic year and covers tuition plus some other expenses.

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship
A fairly recent endowment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge that allows outstanding students to pursue advanced degrees at Cambridge. The award covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge in order to complete the degree. Students must first apply and be accepted to Cambridge to be considered for this award.

George J. Mitchell Scholarship
A nationally competitive fellowship sponsored by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance which awards 12 scholarships annually to cover tuition and expenses for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

German Chancellor Fellowship
Ten fellowships are awarded annually to career-oriented U.S. citizens, by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, to conduct a research project in Germany. The program provides for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Successful applicants have come from a wide range of specializations, such as architecture, graphic and performing arts, business, economics, journalism, law, and social and political studies. Applications from the life sciences and engineering may be considered if the topic has a compelling social or humanistic dimension.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
Prestigious U.S. program which awards 60 to 65 scholarships annually to fund students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. The program provides up to $30,000 for graduate study, as well as leadership training, graduate school counseling, and internship opportunities. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following the funding. Applicants must be in their junior year, should be in the top quarter of their class, and should be committed to a career in public service.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship
Approximately 40 scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding students for graduate study. The award covers educational and living expenses of up to $50,000 per year for up to six years at any accredited graduate school, in the U.S. or abroad. Applicants should be planning to enter their first graduate degree program and should not have been previously nominated for a JKC graduate scholarship. Applicants must be nominated by their undergraduate institution and must meet the financial need requirements set by the Foundation.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship
Discretionary grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to students who will pursue terminal degrees in specific fields in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. In 2008, the Dept. of Education estimated a number of 64 awards, with the estimated average size of awards at $42,892 and an average project period of 48 months. Award recipients are selected by a two part process: review of application materials by a selection panel and a determination of financial need.

Minority International (MHIRT)
A national program designed to encourage students to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral research that provides funding to do health-related research in developing countries. These grants support innovative programs that offer international research training opportunities to qualified undergraduate, graduate, and health professions students who are from populations underrepresented in basic science, biomedical, clinical, or behavioral health research career fields.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship
U.S. program that awards 80 scholarships to sophomores and juniors pursuing careers related to issues of the environment and natural resources. The Udall also awards scholarships only to Native American and Native Alaskan applicants who are pursuing careers in tribal public policy or Native health care. These scholarships provide $5000 for educational expenses and an exclusive four day summer orientation program.

Rhodes Scholarship
One of the oldest and most distinguished scholarship programs, initiated by the will of Cecil Rhodes, that allows exceptional students worldwide to study at Oxford University. Award covers tuition and expenses for two years of graduate study. Each year, 32 U.S. students are awarded a Rhodes scholarship. This is a very competitive scholarship. Interested students should begin planning their application process by sophomore year or before.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship
Scholarship program, instituted in 1947 by the Rotary Foundation, an internationally renowned service organization, that grants men and women from over 100 counties the opportunity to study abroad in an effort to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The Foundation awards academic scholarships and language study scholarships. The application process takes place a year and a half before the scholarship period.
