About
A nationally competitive fellowship sponsored by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance, named for the former U.S. Senator who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland in the late 1990s.
Award
Tuition, housing, a living stipend, an international travel stipend, and transportation to/from Ireland/Northern Ireland. (No allowance for spouses.)
Time
1 year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Number
12 scholars between the ages of 18-29 chosen annually.
Who’s Eligible
U.S. citizens at least 18, but not over 30 at time of application, with a bachelor's degree completed before study in Ireland begins.
Selection Process
Competitive. Only 20 finalists, and 12 winners each year. Candidates judged on academic excellence & intellectual distinction, an outstanding record of leadership, and a sustained commitment to service & community. Because of the limited number of awards, the committee only interviews those candidates who are committed to the Mitchell if chosen as finalists.
Pre-Application Process
OES Pre-application due late March. Applicants will undergo a campus screening process prior to submitting the official application to the U.S.-Ireland Alliance. Click here for pre-application form. NOTE: you will need the latest version of Adobe Reader to use this form.
Application Process
Application due early October. Official application includes institutional endorsement, 5 letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Followed by a two-part interview process, semi-finals and finals.
