Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program

About                  
Fellowship awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to students of superior academic ability and with demonstrated financial need for the purposes of study at the doctoral or master's of fine arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Award                
An institutional payment and stipend. The institutional payment is accepted by the fellow's graduate institution in lieu of tuition and fees (in 2007, $12, 627). The stipend is based on the fellow's financial need (maximum award in 2007 was $30,000).

Up to 48 months.

About 60 per year.

Who’s Eligible
U.S. citizen/national/permanent resident in one of the selected fields in arts, humanities, or social sciences who has not yet completed the first full year of study for a doctoral program (or master's program if that is terminal degree for specific field) and is eligible to receive financial aid (according to HEA of 1965, section 484).
 
Selection  Process
Competitive. Fellows are selected on the basis of scholarly achievement and promise and financial need.

Pre-Application Process           
None required, but we encourage applicants to make an appointment with our office for any help you may need throughout the application process.

Application Process
Application becomes available in August 2008 and will be due mid-October 2008. Applicants are then required to submit their FAFSA by January 31, 2009. Application materials include a statement of purpose, academic transcripts, scholarly awards/honors, supporting arts and materials for applicable fields, GRE scores for applicable fields, and 3 recommendation letters. All materials must be included in one package for submission, no exceptions.
