Barry S. Goldwater Scholarship

About                  
Scholarships founded in 1986 by the U.S. Congress to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater from Arizona which serve to encourage excellence in math and science.  Funded by the U.S. Government, Goldwater Scholarships are awarded to outstanding college juniors and seniors who are pursuing careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. 

Award                
Up to $7500 annually to cover tuition, fees, books, room & board.  Funds may supplement other scholarship monies the student is already receiving but will not duplicate them.

Time                     
Junior applicants who receive the scholarship for their senior year will only receive one year of funding.  Successful sophomore applicants will receive funding for their junior year and may be able to renew the scholarship for their senior year.
 
Number               
About 300 per year.  In 2007, 317 awards were given from an applicant pool of 1,110.

Who’s Eligible
Full-time students in their sophomore or junior year at an accredited institution who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents (with intent to obtain citizenship), or U.S. nationals with a “B” average in college and in the top fourth of their class.  Applicants must be pursuing a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering; the Goldwater website lists examples of majors and career plans for past scholars if you are unsure your field qualifies.

Selection  Process
Highly competitive.  In addition to academic excellence, successful applicants show an outstanding potential for and demonstrated commitment to a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. 

Pre-Application Process           
OES Pre-application due mid-October.  Applicants will undergo a campus screening process prior to submitting the official application materials to the Goldwater Foundation. Click here for pre-application form. NOTE: you will need the latest version of Adobe Reader to use this form.

Application Process
Application due late January.  In addition to the university nomination and official application form, applicants must submit an essay and three faculty recommendations.
