About
A program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation that allows career-oriented individuals the opportunity to spend a year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. The fellowship is project-based.
Award
Monthly stipend of €2000-€2600 depending on fellow’s individual circumstances, plus travel expenses to/from Germany, costs of German language course, introductory seminar, study tour, and final meeting in Berlin. Fellows may add an allowance for spouse/children who accompany fellow to Germany.
Time
1 year, beginning in September. Extensions for up to 3 months may be granted. Also, if extra German instruction is needed, fellows may need to arrive in Germany as early as June for intensive language training.
Number
10 annually.
Who’s Eligible
U.S. citizens less than 35 years old, with at least a bachelor’s degree by the start of the fellowship year. Applicants are not simply students, and come from the private, public, and academic spheres. German proficiency is not required at time of application, but good language skills are necessary; fellows not proficient in German must participate in intensive language training prior the tenure of the fellowship.
Selection Process
Very Competitive. Only 10 fellowships are awarded each year. Successful applicants have come from many specializations, but projects should have a compelling social or humanistic dimension. Viable candidates will have a high level of career certainty and professional ambition, if not already more experienced; therefore, the competition for new graduates is very tough.
Pre-Application Process
None required, but we encourage applicants to make an appointment with our office for any help you may need throughout the application process.
Application Process
Application due end of October. Application must include a 2500 word research proposal, transcripts and diplomas, 3-5 letters of recommendation, and a statement from your proposed German mentor that indicates his/her willingness to provide professional assistance throughout the program. You may also include a list of publications and proof of German language skills, if applicable.
