About
DAAD, or the German Academic Exchange Service, provides study scholarships and research grants to U.S. and Canadian students from all academic fields wanting to pursue graduate study in Germany.  Programs include study scholarships, research grants, summer programs, professional internships, and German language courses.

Award
Varies with program.  The study scholarships typically provide for one year: tuition waiver, travel costs, health insurance and a monthly stipend (approx. €750).  Scholars may also receive a rent subsidy and family allowance.  Research grants are similar, but with a higher monthly stipend (approx. €1000) and no course requirements.

Time
Study Scholarships: 1 academic year (10 months, October to July), with a possibility for 1 year extension.
Research Grants: 1-10 months, with a possibility for 1 year extension.
See DAAD website for times periods of other opportunities.

Number
Varies with program.  According to the DAAD New York office, in North America about 200-300 students are awarded a long term grant and about 400 are awarded short term grant.

Who’s Eligible
U.S. or Canadian students, either graduating seniors or graduate students, whose proposed research project makes stay in Germany essential.  For most of the DAAD scholarships, applicants need to be U.S. or Canadian citizens, though DAAD also has some opportunities for international students.  See their website for details.  Students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a good command of German.

Selection  Process
Competitive.  Approximately 1 student out of 4 is awarded a grant, according to the DAAD New York office.  While UT is not a partner university with DAAD, our students are eligible and apply directly to DAAD rather than through the university.

Pre-Application Process
None required, but we encourage applicants to make an appointment with our office for any help you may need throughout the application process.

Application Process
Application due mid November (except music/visual arts/performing arts: early November).  Includes online application form, C.V./resume, study proposal, 2 recommendation letters, evidence of contact with German institution, language evaluation form, and transcripts.
